About Us

The Ted Vickery Memorial Golf Tournament honors Theodore James Vickery, a Father, Brother, Uncle, Grandfather, Teacher, Mentor and Friend. Theodore grew up in New York State and summered in the 1000 Islands. In 1976, Ted and his wife bought Point of View Cottage in Thousand Island Park on Wellesley Island. Since then, the cottage has been a special place in the family’s heart. Multiple family events are hosted there along with the memories that go with it.

Ted was an educator for 30 years at Guilderland High School in Albany New York. He dedicated majority of his life to teaching others and also actively volunteering in his community. Ted was an assistant coach for the first golf team at La Fargeville Central School. Ted’s love for golf helped start the golf program that is still there today. He was a handy man and very crafty. After retirement during one of the summers up in the 1000 islands he suffered a heart attack. Wellesley Island Volunteer Fire Department came to his aid and saved his life. Since that time, the Vickery family has been forever grateful for their response. Due to that response, he was able to live out his days making bird houses with his grandchildren, boating on the St. Lawrence River, golfing and spending time and hosting family events. In July of 2007, Ted tragically passed away from Stage 4 colorectal cancer. It was a huge loss to the family but they know they wanted to honor him the way he would want to be. Due to his love for golf, the family picked a golf tournament that would be a fundraiser to raise funds for the Wellesley Island Volunteer Fire Department since they played such an important roll in Ted’s life. Even though Ted was not a first responder himself, he still had a huge appreciation for them. As the tournament has grown over the years, the golf tournament now is raising money for other first responder agencies around Jefferson County along with a $1000 Scholarship for a graduating senior from La Fargeville Central School. His daughter Susan V. Rapant (one of the founders of this tournament) followed in his footsteps and became an educator and has been a teacher at La Fargeville Central School for over 30 years and is retiring this year. His granddaughter Callie Rapant became a first responder herself and is now a paramedic at Northern Oswego County Ambulance (NOCA) out of Pulaski NY.
